The Northern Policy Institute will study the idea of a basic income guarantee (BIG) this fall during a conference in Sudbury.

The conference will be held Oct. 5-6 at the Hellenic Centre in Sudbury’s south end. Encouraged to attend are decision-makers, community leaders, and members of the public who share an interest in the topic.

“Northern Policy Institute exists to provide fair, balanced and objective assessments of policy,” NPI president Charles Cirtwill said in a release.

“We are looking forward to hosting this upcoming conference on such a relevant and timely issue to Northern Ontario.”

Invited speakers to the event include Dr. Gayle Broad, assistant professor in the Community Economic and Social Development (CESD) program at Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie; Dr. Lindsay Tedds, associate professor in the School of Public Administration at the University of Victoria; and Michael Crawford Urban, policy associate for the Mowat Centre.

NPI describes a basic income guarantee as “a payment to eligible families or individuals that ensures a minimum level of income. The core idea behind this policy means that everyone would be guaranteed some basic amount of money upon which to live.”

This past spring, the Ontario government included in the budget funds for a pilot project to test the idea of the basic income guarantee.
