A Sudbury firm has been recognized for engineering excellence.

R.V. Anderson (RVA) was recognized by the Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) during its annual awards presentation on Jan. 28.

The firm earned one award for work on the Sudbury wastewater treatment plant upgrades, which involved building a new plant on top of the old one.

RVA provided project management, design, and engineering services during construction of the $11-million project, which maximized the use of existing infrastructure and saved the city $19 million.

RVA was also acknowledged for its work on the Dominion Road sewage pumping station and force main project in Niagara.

The $8-million project replaced the existing sewage pumping station that serves the town of Fort Erie, as well as replacing 3.5 km of force main, and 2.5 km of local roads. Challenges included a constrained site, and the need to keep the existing station operational while the new station was under construction.

RVA has won an OPWA Project of the Year Award every year since 2008. Past projects for which it’s been recognized include the sewage rock tunnel project in Sudbury’s south end and the Levack and Onaping water supply project.
