Former deputy prime minister Jean Charest will be the keynote speaker at next week’s Naturallia networking forum in Sudbury.

Charest, who served as Quebec’s premier from 2003 to 2012, is currently a partner at the law firm McCarthy Tétrault. He will speak during the Naturallia gala dinner on Nov. 12 at the Holiday Inn.

The gala is part of a four-day business networking event designed to help companies forge productive and practical working relationships in the sectors of value-added wood processing, mining supply and services, smart energy development, and advanced manufacturing.

As minister of the environment, Charest led the Canada delegation at the 1992 Earth Summit on the economy and the environment in Rio and was praised for his leadership role among G7 countries on climate change and biodiversity.

The Charest government is best known for a major initiative for the sustainable development of Northern Québec called Plan Nord.

Under Charest’s leadership, Québec experienced a sustained period of economic prosperity with stronger economic growth from 2008 to 2012 than the U.S., Europe, Canada and Ontario, despite a global financial and economic crisis.
