Abbas Homayed, publisher of Northern Ontario Business, received the Dr. Fred Sheridan Award from Cambrian College, the college’s highest honour.

Introduced in 1992, the award is named for a visionary who was a long-time friend and supporter of Cambrian College and who, until his death in 1990, gave generously of his time and energy to all levels of education and to this community, according to a release.

It is annually bestowed on an individual who displays “extraordinary service to education and to the community.”

Homayed is vice-president of Laurentian Publishing and publisher of Northern Life (NOB’s sister publication), and was recently appointed president of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association.

He has served as a member and as chair of Cambrian’s Board of Governors, and has worked with a number of community organizations, including Maison Vale Hospice, the Northern Cancer Foundation, the Greater Sudbury Food Bank, and the United Way Centraide. He has helped to raise nearly $8 million for charities and deserving organizations in our community.
