Sudbury’s Stack Brewing has been acknowledged with a gold-medal standing at the 2014 Ontario Brewing Awards.

The brewery, which launched in the spring of 2013, earned gold for its Biere de Garde, Les Portes de l’Enfer.

Les Portes de L’Enfer is described as “pour(ing) a deep amber colour with pleasant caramel notes accompanied with a little warming on the palate from the alcohol.” Biere de Garde (“beer for keeping”) was originally brewed in Belgian and French farmhouses nearly 600 years ago, and it was traditionally brewed in the spring with a high alcohol content to last the summer without refrigeration.

“We couldn’t be happier about this win,” Stack owner Shawn Mailloux said in a news release. “We haven’t even been open for a full year and are already receiving tremendous provincial recognition for our quality craft beer. We’re proud to bring this award home to Sudbury.”

To qualify for the Ontario Brewing Awards, beers must be brewed in Ontario. Entrants pay a submission fee to have their products blind taste-tested and weighed against a list of criteria based on judging standards set out by the Beer Judge Certification Program.
