Sault Ste. Marie is forming a Community Adjustment Committee to come up with a plan for the future of the city and its residents.

On April 25, the community’s MPP, David Orazietti, announced $200,000 from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to help put the plan into development.

"This important and necessary support is being delivered through the Ontario Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities and recognizes the difficult circumstances that communities face during an economic downturn," ?Orazietti said in a release.

"The need for this type of assistance continues to reinforce the importance of having an effective local growth plan that will strengthen our economy and create jobs.”

The plan will identify workers’ needs, and examine issues like community infrastructure, social development, labour force development, education and training development, and business retention and expansion.

Sault Ste. Marie’s economy is struggling right now, with two of its major employers facing industry setbacks.

Essar Steel Algoma is currently under the Sale and Investment Solicitation Process in hopes of avoiding bankruptcy, while Tenaris Algoma Tubes has laid off hundreds of workers, citing slow sales due to the low price of oil.
