A Sault Ste. Marie-based digital media company continues to expand its empire across Ontario.

Village Media announced the Feb. 8 launch of GuelphToday.com, an online news offering in Guelph.

The new media service will employ staffers who were recently laid off at the Guelph Mercury when its parent company discontinued print production in January.

Similar to Village Media’s Northern Ontario properties, GuelphToday will focus on covering and delivering online news to Guelph and the outlying communities of Fergus, Eramosa and Aberfoyle.

“GuelphToday is about providing ‘local’ news and information in real time,” said Jeff Elgie, CEO of Village Media in a statement. “We are proud to be extremely community-minded and cover all the important stories in your city. We are very excited to continue growing a successful business model, as we expand into Guelph. We have a great team in place and look forward to becoming an integrated part of the community’s daily news.”

Village Media’s other media properties include SooToday.com, BarrieToday, LOCAL2.ca, BayToday.ca, and TimminsToday.com. The company also maintains strategic partnerships with Laurentian Publishing in Sudbury, owners of NorthernLife.ca; TBNewswatch.com in Thunder Bay and the Manitoulin Expositor.
