There are considerable business opportunities to be had at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport.

The airport’s development corporation and the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation announced they’ve officially teamed up in a “strategic partnership” to scrounge for new industrial and commercial development at the facility.

Under this agreement, the two parties said they’ll be working to attract companies to the airport, work on growing opportunities for those currently on the site, and lure additional air carriers to the Sault.

“We’re excited to be working with the SSMEDC team in regards to utilizing their business and marketing development services,” said Terry Bos, president-CEO of the Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development, in an Oct. 29 news release. “Over the past decade, we’ve worked together on a number of fruitful initiatives, and I look forward to building off these successes in the weeks and months to come.”

The two organizations have collaborated on past projects that led to a $2-million physical expansion of the passenger terminal, the attraction of Porter Airlines in 2011 and Sunwing Airlines in 2008, and in landing JD Aero Technical, an aircraft refurbishment outfit.

“Past efforts have generated significant employment opportunities for our community, and we’re excited to continue this positive trend,” said Dan Hollingsworth, executive director of business development for the EDC. “With the available land at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport, and the transportation efficiencies that many businesses and organizations would realize by locating there, we’re working to draw additional opportunities to the site.”
