The next phase of the redevelopment of the Canadian plaza at the International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie will go ahead in June.

In a news release, the Federal Bridge Corporation Ltd. said this second phase of this ongoing redevelopment project would encompass the construction of new facilities for the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA).

General contractor EllisDon has been awarded the construction contract, while Sault-based architectural firm EPOH will continue as the designer.

Works completed last year in the first phase of the project included the construction of the new duty-free building and maintenance garage. The demolition of the old duty-free building has made way for the construction of the new traffic building, which will temporarily house both traffic and commercial operations while the new commercial building is built.

The government said extensive planning has gone into ensuring impacts to the traffic flow and bridge operations are minimized during the construction process.

The work, which is valued at $32.9 million, is funded through the Gateway and Border Crossings Fund.

Completion of this phase of the project is anticipated to be March, 2018.
