A team of four Algoma University students claimed top honours at the ninth annual Northern Ontario Business Case Competition on March 27, after outscoring 13 teams from other Northern Ontario schools.

For the first time in two years, two teams from Algoma U earned first and second place in the competition. Fourth-year business administration students Michael McNeice, Corey James, Olivia Potvin, and Muhammed Murad Syed were this year’s winners. Jacob Giordano, Mark McKenna, Michale Orazietti, and Benjamin Pomber earned second. Laurentian University students Alexander Fievoli, Amber Cleary, Eric Lavergne-Giroux, and Richard Filliter placed third.

The teams finished out the two-day competition with an awards lunch and a special presentation from Terry O’Reilly, host of the CBC’s O’Reilly on Advertising, The Age of Persuasion, and his current program, Under the Influence.

The guest judge was Bruce Croxon, co-founder of the online dating site Lavalife, and a former Dragon on the CBC’s hit reality show Dragons’ Den.

Students from Algoma University’s satellite program in Brampton, Lakehead University and Laurentian University also competed in the event.

The Northern Ontario Business Case Competition is part of Algoma University’s business strategy and policy course, and requires students from Northern Ontario to develop a thorough strategy and solution to an unknown business case.
