The City of Sault Ste. Marie will start the search for a new chief administrative officer this month after Joe Fratesi announced his retirement from the position, effective April 30.

Fratesi has served the city for 35 years and is the Sault’s longest serving CAO.

“Over my 35 years of service, I have had the privilege of serving alongside many great men and women, both in the political and the administrative streams,” he said in a news release.

“I have learned much along the way from my colleagues and hopefully I have been able to reciprocate in at least some small way.”

Fratesi said he’ll miss city hall and his colleagues, but is confident the city will be left in good hands.

Sault Mayor Christian Provenzano commended Fratesi for his years of service and dedication to the community.

“Personally, I thank Mr. Fratesi for his assistance during my transition to the mayor’s office, and I wish him a very happy and healthy retirement and much success in whatever he chooses to do next,” Provenzano said.

Formal authorization to start the CAO replacement process, in accordance with the appropriate city bylaw, will be discussed at the next regular council meeting scheduled for Jan. 12.
