Sault Ste. Marie’s efforts to redevelop its waterfront are being noticed by the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI).

The institute awarded the city the RENEW Excellence in Project Development: Neighbourhood Scale award at its annual Brownie Awards gala, held Oct. 29 in Toronto.

The Sault Ste. Marie waterfront revitalization sustained public, business and political commitment since the 1960s to achieve a linked waterfront park system preserving existing land and water habitats to connect downtown, a farmers market and new condominium projects.

The city is continuing its renewal efforts with the ongoing development of the Canal District, a multi-faceted residential and commercial project that includes the former St. Marys Paper mill property.
