Sault Ste. Marie will host the 54th annual conference of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) and Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH).

The conference, which takes place May 7-9, will include sessions on strategies to address homelessness in Northern Ontario, strengthening regional partnerships, asset management planning, age-friendly community planning, succession planning, and Northern Ontario’s forest products and wood manufacturing sectors.

Sault-based Team Jacobs, which won the gold medal in men’s curling at the 2014 Winter Olympics, will give the keynote address.

Other highlights of the conference include a trade show featuring 28 exhibitors, a banquet honouring the 2014 recipient of the FONOM Executive Award, the annual FONOM meeting and resolutions session, and a minister’s forum, which will include several confirmed cabinet ministers.

The FONOM membership is made up of 110 municipalities/towns/cities of northeastern Ontario with the majority of delegates representing these areas. FONOM acts in an advocacy role in relation to political and economic issues of concern to Northern Ontario.
