The Sault Major Hockey Association has received $75,000 to help host a national hockey tournament in April.

FedNor has provided the funding for the TELUS Cup National Midget Hockey Championship, which is scheduled for April 22-28 in Sault Ste. Marie. The money is aimed at promoting tourism in the Sault and bringing new visitors to the area.

Specifically, the funding will be used to promote and market the event, as well as develop tourism packages highlighting local attractions that will be offered to visitors during their stay. The event will be broadcast on The Sports Network and Fast Hockey, which will also assist in marketing Sault Ste. Marie and Northern Ontario as a destination for future, large-scale sporting events.

“Sports tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of our regional economy,” said Matt Cavaliere, president of the Sault Major Hockey Association, in a news release. “Thanks to the support of FedNor and the federal government, we will be able to demonstrate the city’s ability to host large sports events and showcase the region’s tourism attractions to encourage visitors and viewers to explore our backyard.”
