Kenora MP Greg Rickford has been named the new Minister for FedNor, replacing Tony Clement.

Rickford moves into the coveted regional economic development portfolio as part of a larger cabinet shuffle by the Conservative government. Clement will stay on as Treasury Board president.

Rickford was first elected to office in 2008. In the cabinet shuffle, he was named Minister of State of Science and Technology.

“I am proud to have been the Minister responsible for FedNor over the past seven years,” said Clement in a July 15 release. “Northern Ontario has seen unprecedented success from FedNor measures.”

Clement lauded FedNor's accomplishments since 2006 in delivering $358 million in investment for more than 1,500 projects across the regional including funding for Laurentian University's School of Architecture, for robotics at Sudbury's Penguin Automated System, and to turn Sudbury's Ramsey Lake “into a world-class destination for boating and dragon boat racing.”

Other dollars have been funneled in the rebuilding efforts in Elliot Lake following last year's tragic and fatal mall collapse and for key infrastructure projects like the Thunder Bay Airport and the Timmins industrial park.
