The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has chosen Bombardier and Thunder Bay to supply 204 new streetcars in a spending program worth more than $1.29 billion.

Bombardier beat out Germany's Siemens in the two-company bidding race. The commission board votes Monday on whether to approve the purchase which relies on provincial and federal government investment. Both companies had promised at least one-quarter of all manufacturing would be done in Ontario.

A prototype of the new light rail system will be delivered in 2011. The first street cars enter service in 2012 with all 204 operating by 2018. Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath commended the TTC to their 'Buy Ontario' stance.

"Today, we are happy that during a time when Ontarians need it the most, manufacturing projects are going forth that will sustain Ontario jobs."

Thunder Bay's Bombardier plant on Montreal Road has been making Toronto streetcars for decades.
