Bearskin Airlines is expanding its service between the North’s five big cities.

Effective Sept. 28, Bearskin Airlines will add up to 23 new nonstop flights weekly between its Sudbury Airport hub and Timmins, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay.

An additional 37 new connecting opportunities arising from increased nonstop service will provide a total of 60 new weekly flight options between Northern Ontario's five largest cities.

Timmins and North Bay will see the largest increase in service, essentially doubling weekday service to and from Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay.

Weekly connecting opportunities between Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, Kenora, Dryden, Fort Frances and Timmins/North Bay will also increase by seven flights each week.

"This is a significant expansion of our service," Ron Hell, director of marketing and sales, said in a news release. “Demand for our service in northeastern Ontario has been growing as we continue to evolve our fares strategy to be more competitive in the marketplace. In addition, we are the only airline serving these markets that does not charge for your first checked bag, providing for saving up to $35 each way."

Bearskin Airlines’ fares strategy has been evolving over the last 18 months with reductions of up to 60 per cent on fixed fares more than a year ago, followed by reductions on flex fares throughout the last 12 months and further reductions on its highest level liberty fares, coinciding with increased service on Sept. 28.

Bearskin Airlines’ direct service and participation in the Aeroplan Frequent Flyer Program are geared to serving the business community who commute regularly between Northern Ontario’s major cities and smaller communities.

Bearskin Airlines is one of Canada’s oldest commuter airlines.

Founded in 1963, and named after the Northern Ontario community of Bearskin Lake, the company maintains its major base of operation in Thunder Bay and employs almost 200 people.

Bearskin Airlines has provided the most direct service between Northern Ontario's five major cities since 1992 when service between Thunder Bay and Sudbury was first initiated.
