Funding has been announced for four-laning on Highway 69, from Sudbury to Parry Sound.

Construction will begin this summer on the next portion of four-laning on Highway 69 between Sudbury and Parry Sound.

The province has announced it will provide $19.4 million for this next stage of the ongoing, multi-year construction project.

Work will begin this summer to realign 2.7 kilometres of CN railway tracks and build three new highway bridges at Highway 522 north of Henvy Inlet. The project will make room for an interchange at highways 69 and 522.

“I know how important it is for Sudburians to see the completion of four-laning of Highway 69,” Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault said in a news release. “This is vital to both the economic development of the North as well as the safety of our roads.”

The massive project began in 2005 and was originally scheduled to be complete in 2017. But more recent estimates peg the completion date at 2021.

Challenges include the rocky terrain and an ongoing federal environmental assessment process, which includes consultations with First Nations along the route.
