Sault Ste. Marie has received more than $4 million in funding to go toward the expansion of its harbour.

FedNor and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. (NOHFC) have each pitched in $2.12 million for a total of $4.24 million toward the multi-year endeavour.

The funds will be used to complete planning in advance of the project, which will include completing site plans, conducting Aboriginal consultations and undertaking an environmental assessment.

The multi-year project, which at last estimate was pegged at $121 million, has been in the works for some time.

“The public access port is an important community priority that will generate benefits for businesses throughout the area,” Sault Mayor Debbie Amaroso said in a release.

The public gateway deep harbour port project will be led by the City of Sault Ste. Marie and is a partnership venture with public and private sector stakeholders. Some of the private sector firms that are expected to use the facilities include Essar Steel Algoma, Tenaris Algoma Tubes, Avery Construction and Purvis Marine.
