Greater Sudbury Airport is building a hangar for Discovery Air with the aid of $1 million from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.

Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci made the announcement on Dec. 6.

The airport's development corporation is constructing a 30,000-square-foot hangar to enable the air carrier and resource industry service company to expand its regional operations. The company provides aviation and training services along with air ambulance services, charter flights and fire protection services.

The new hangar will also house an environmental research centre and lab for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

“By investing in this project, we are supporting private-sector expansion, generating new revenue for our local airport, and ensuring that it continues to be an important economic engine for the Greater Sudbury area,” said Bartolucci in a statement.
