The Northeast Community Network (NeCN) wants Northern Ontario to be known as the “world’s best snowmobile destination” to help drum up more tourism.

NeCN, with funding from the province and FedNor, is developing a snowmobile tourism destination plan to help lure more snowmobilers North.

Sylvie Fontaine, chair of NeCN, said the aim is to stimulate economic growth for snowmobile tourism operators, stakeholders and organizations throughout the region.

“Snowmobiling has a significant impact on our local economy and it is critical that we cultivate strategies to foster long-term growth and prosperity of the tourism sector,” Fontaine said in a news release.

A consulting team comprised of representatives from Markey Consulting, Karen Jones Consulting Inc., Let’s Roll Ideation Consulting, and Detail Media will help develop the plan.

Over the next several months, NeCN will glean feedback from snowmobilers, clubs, volunteers, businesses, and community stakeholders regarding snowmobile tourism within the region. A survey is currently underway, and a series of focus group sessions is scheduled to take place later in April.

The overarching goal is to identify potential tourism development opportunities and strategies within the region.

The Northeast Community Network is an incorporated, regional, not-for-profit organization that promotes collaborative economic development, applied research and support for forestry, mining, agriculture and business development.
