An inquest has been called in the 2011 death of a worker at the Hoyle Pond Mine in Timmins.

Dr. David Eden, Regional Supervising Coroner for Inquests, announced May 12 that an inquest will be held into the death of David Yuskow, 57, who died on March 10, 2011, from injuries received on the job at the underground mine.

David Yuskow Sr., a 57-year-old electrician who worked at the mine, was crushed by a scoop tram at the 1,390-foot level.

The operator of the scoop tram had not seen Yuskow, who was rolling out electrical cable in a production travel way, when he was run over and killed. The operator was not aware of the presence of a person in the travel way. Since the fatality, the mine installed a using a system of signs and amber lights to alert tram operators to the presence of other workers on foot.

In 2012, Goldcorp Canada was fined $350,000 in connection with a fatal accident.

The company pleaded guilty in 2012 to a Ministry of Labour charge of failing to provide sufficient information, instruction and supervision to protect the safety of its workers.

An inquest, which is mandatory under the Coroners Act, will examine the events surrounding the fatality. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest is expected to last three days and to hear from approximately seven witnesses.

The inquest begins June 13 at the Superior Court of Justice in Timmins.

Dr. David Cameron will preside as inquest coroner and Dale Cox will be counsel to the coroner.
