Ontario Ministry of Labour inspectors issued 192 orders for violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act to mining companies between Oct. 1 and Nov. 30, 2015.

In a press release, the ministry said inspectors visited 78 mining workplaces across the province during that time period.

The orders included 16 orders to stop work on equipment in response to health and safety issues; 23 orders for not following required program guidelines and provincial modular training standard; and 153 orders for hazards involving equipment, protective barriers (e.g., fencing), safety precautions and ground conditions.

The mining inspectors, who visited underground and surface mines across Ontario, targeted recently opened or new mines, mines where previous incidents were observed, mines with a poor compliance history, smelters and mills, and exploration sites.

The ministry, who did not name any of the mining companies, said the employers have addressed all the issued orders.
