Toronto’s Harte Gold announced that the first blast to cut the portal on its Sugar Zone gold deposit, north of White River, was completed on Oct. 30.

Technica Mining is working around the clock to handle the underground ramp development with the aim of taking a 70,000-tonne bulk sample that will be processed at Barrick Gold’s Hemlo mill early next year. The Sugar Zone property is 60 kilometres east of the Hemlo Gold Camp.

A preliminary economic assessment from July 2012 reveals the Sugar Zone contains an indicated resource of 980,900 tonnes, grading 10.13 grams per tonne (g/t) for 319,280 ounces of contained gold, and an inferred resource of 580,500 tonnes, grading 8.36 g/t Au for 155,960 ounces of contained gold.

The company also announced Roger Emdin has come aboard as vice-president of projects.

Emdin is a mining engineer with more than 30 years of experience in senior management roles with several large operating mines and leading roles in health and safety, permitting and government relations.

“We are pleased to welcome Roger to the team, his hands-on experience and strong track record developing successful mines are a great asset to Harte Gold,” said company president-CEO Stephen Roman in a statement.
