Goldcorp reports fatality at Musselwhite Mine

A scoop operator has died following an incident at Goldcorp ’s Musselwhite Mine northwest of Thunder Bay. In a news release, Goldcorp said a scoop operator was working underground early on Nov. 26 when an “unexpected fall of ground” occurred.

A scoop operator has died following an incident at Goldcorp’s Musselwhite Mine northwest of Thunder Bay.

In a news release, Goldcorp said a scoop operator was working underground early on Nov. 26 when an “unexpected fall of ground” occurred.

Although first responders were dispatched to initiate search and rescue operations, the scoop was “completely covered” in material, resulting in the fatality, the company said.

“We are all deeply saddened by this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the individual's family, friends and colleagues,” Goldcorp CEO Chuck Jeannes said in the release.

“The health and safety of our employees is our highest priority at Goldcorp. We are fully co-operating with the ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the accident, and are offering support to the individual's family and employees at the mine site.”

Operations at the mine have been suspended while an investigation is undertaken into the incident.

Goldcorp said it was “committed to reviewing and reinforcing safety procedures to ensure safety remains the top priority across all operations.”
