An unidentified worker at Glencore's Nickel Rim mine was killed Tuesday, the company and the Ontario Ministry of Labour have confirmed.

Ministry spokesperson Janet Deline said the ministry was informed just before lunch Tuesday, but she's not sure when the accident took place.

"We don't have too many details at the moment,” Deline said. “But we were notified of a fatality at Glencore's Nickel Rim mine. We've learned that an employee was struck by a piece of machinery causing fatal injuries."

Greater Sudbury Police have secured the scene at the mine, she said, as is emergency medical staff. A ministry inspector was en route to the scene, Deline added.

In an email, Glencore spokesperson Yonaniko Grenon said the company is co-operating fully with the investigation.

"It is with deepest regret we confirm a fatality underground at our Nickel Rim South Mine this morning," Grenon said in the email. "We have informed the family of the deceased and are extending our full support to the family ... All shifts at Nickel Rim South are cancelled for today until further notice."
