The OPP are conducting a criminal investigation following the June 3 death of a worker at Detour Lake gold mine near Cochrane.

According to a statement from the OPP, millwright Denis Millette, 52, was making a repair to equipment at the mine that day when he was observed to be in “medical distress.” On-site medical staff attended to him, but Millette later died.

As is required following any workplace death, the Ministry of Labour investigated at the time of the incident. Ministry officials returned to the mine on Sept. 1 to obtain additional information related to the investigation.

In a news release, Detour Gold Corp. said the company was advised by the ministry on Aug. 31 that the OPP would investigate the death.

Detour Gold did not publicly report the incident at the time of the incident; however, it did release a brief statement about the ongoing investigation, indicating it would “continue to co-operate fully with the police and the Ministry of Labour in this investigation.”

The company said it would continue its “support and condolences to the family, and is respectful of their privacy.”
