Detour Lake Mine poured its one millionth ounce of gold on Sept. 16, approximately 30 months after pouring its first gold bar on February 18, 2013.

To mark this occasion, Michael Gravelle, minister of Northern development and mines, local mayors, and Aboriginal leaders visited the Detour Lake mine on Sept. 21.

“We're pleased to celebrate this significant achievement in just over two and half years with our employees, contractors and Aboriginal partners,” said Paul Martin, Detour Gold's president and CEO, said in a news release. “Our goal is to ensure that our next millionth ounce of gold is produced with improved operational excellence, strong environmental stewardship and a leading safety culture.”

Detour Gold is an intermediate gold producer in Canada that holds a 100 per cent interest in the Detour Lake mine, a long life large-scale open pit operation in the Timmins mining camp.

On Sept. 2, the company announced it was being investigated by the Ministry of Labour for a death at the mine that occurred on June 3 of this year.

Millwright Denis Millette, 52, was making a repair to equipment at the mine that day when he was observed to be in “medical distress.” On-site medical staff attended to him, but Millette later died.
