The mineral commodities market may be scuffling, but Northern Ontario mining supply companies still made a big impression at one of the world’s largest annual mining shows in Toronto.

Fifty-six companies and organizations exhibited at the Northern Ontario Mining Showcase at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) annual convention during the first week of March.

The four-day industry trade show was attended by more than 23,000 delegates.

Led by the City of Temiskaming Shores, this is the second consecutive year of the pavilion which moved into the Metro Toronto Convention Centre’s north hall after spending its inaugural year at the Steam Whistle Brewery.

FedNor invested $375,000 for the pavilion with participating companies paying $500 for kiosk space.

Event organizer Marla Tremblay was pleased with the turnout of Northern exhibitors.

“It was such a wide array of companies; you had exploration, drilling, manufacturers, people who made apparel and technology people.”

At 6,000 square feet, “we had the biggest pavilion in the show,” said Tremblay. Discussions are underway to consider expanding the showcase event for next year.
Tremblay said some companies emerged from the show with deals. One company secured a distributor for its products in Peru. Another firm finally meet a client that they were chasing and were hopeful of landing a contract.

Tremblay will be surveying the participating companies over the next few months to track and catalogue how impactful the show was for their business and to gauge interest in preparing for next year’s event.

She didn’t rule out organizing a similar regional pavilion to attend other international mining trade shows.
