A fatal accident occurred over the Labour Day Weekend at the Stillwater Mining project in Marathon.

In a Sept. 3 release, the company reported that James Buckner, a contractor for Stillwater Canada, was fatally injured during the afternoon of Aug. 31.

The Ministry of Labour and the Ontario Provincial Police are investigating.

The Montana-based company is working through an environmental assessment process for its Marathon PGM open pit project north of town. If the project is greenlighted, there could potentially be 350 direct jobs and 400 construction jobs.

“The company is committed to the safety of its employees and contractors and is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation,” said the miner in a statement.
