Former Marathon economic development officer Daryl Skworchinski has been appointed chairman of the province's first Local Forest Management Corporation.

Joining him on the board of directors to the new Nawiinginokiima Forest Management Corporation (NFMC) are Grant Goodwin, Donald Fry, Raymond Boudreau, Tina Forsyth, and Gaétan Malette.

As part of the government's overhaul of the forest tenure system, the corporation will administer and oversee the sale of timber along the northeast shore of Lake Superior and will manage the forest management units of Nagagami Forest, White River Forest, Big Pic Forest, and the Pic River Forest.

The Nawiinginokiima Forest Management Corporation will be in operation this spring.

"A modernized tenure system will create new economic development opportunities for northern communities and First Nations, and the appointment of the board for Nawiinginokiima is an important step in this process,” said David Orazietti, Minister of Natural Resources, in a statement.

"We are looking to the corporation to become a self-sustaining business, focused on getting the most value for Northerners,” said northern development minster Michael Gravelle, MPP, Thunder Bay–Superior North. “It will market, sell and enable access to a predictable and competitively priced supply of Crown forest resources to support jobs in the north. The forestry sector continues to be a priority for our government and is certainly central to supporting strong Northern communities.”
