An entry from the Laurentian School of Architecture has been selected as one of three student finalists in a Toronto design project.

Now in its second year, the Winter Stations Competition asks designers to transform lifeguard stations along Toronto’s beaches into “whimsical winter displays” designed to encourage people outside.

Laurentian’s entry, Aurora Borealis, is comprised of colourful LED lighting, welded aluminum, sewn fabric, and heat-responsive illuminated tubes that react to the touch of visitors, all of which will spin around the lifeguard station like a carousel.

The project team includes: Chris Baziw, Ra'anaa Brown, Trevor D'Orazio, Andrew Harkness, Matthew Hunter, Danielle Kastelein, and Terrance Galvin, school director.

Only seven winners were chosen from 380 local and international submissions.

They will be assembled between Feb. 10 and 14, will debut on Feb. 15, and will remain open to the public until March 20.
