Changes are coming to the province’s Aggregate Resources Act.

Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry Bill Mauro announced Oct. 21 that the regulations surrounding the management of open pits and quarries are being strengthened and the government wants feedback from industry groups, municipal associations, Aboriginal groups and other interested stakeholders.

The changes will mean stronger oversight of aggregate operations, increased fees and royalties, greater environmental accountability, and better communication and accountability with the First Nation and Métis community.

Mauro said these proposed changes are based on recommendations emanating from the standing committee of general government and sessions held last year.

“The changes we are proposing are based on recommendations from the standing committee on general government as well as information gathered last fall, during engagement sessions with municipal associations, key stakeholders, experts, other ministries, and First Nation and Métis.
