More students are looking to online training to complete their education.

Contact North | Contact Nord is reporting an increase of 51.2 per cent in the number of registrations for online courses in the fall semester of 2014, as compared to the same period in 2013.

The organization provides students in northern, remote and rural communities with distance education and training via Ontario's 24 public colleges, 22 public universities, and 250 literacy and basic skills and training providers.

Total student registrations grew from 15,941 in the fall of 2013 to 24,098 in the fall of 2014. On an annual basis, Contact North supports 40,000 student registrations.

Ontarians are turning to online learning as it allows them to pursue their education and training goals without having to leave their community, and it allows them to participate in their courses when it is convenient for them while continuing to meet their work and family responsibilities.

“In record numbers, Ontarians worked to get their degrees, diplomas or certificates, or to upgrade their skills using online learning,” Trish Trenter, the coordinator for recruitment, training and partnerships, said in a news release. “These results are helping to fulfill the government's vision for Ontario to become North America's leading jurisdiction for talent, skills and training.”

Contact North | Contact Nord has 112 online learning centres across the province. The non-profit organization has been funded by the provincial government since 1986.
