On May 29, Cambrian College awarded its highest honour to the founding partners of its powerline technician program.
The Dr. Fred Sheridan Award was bestowed on Greater Sudbury Hydro, the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association, PowerTel, and Vale. Named for one of the college’s founding fathers, the award recognizes extraordinary service to education and society as a whole.
The partners’ financial support and contributions of time, people and equipment enabled Cambrian to launch a new approach to powerline training, including the development of a training field, which was the first of its kind in the college sector. In addition, their employees sit on the college’s program advisory committee, work as instructors in the program, and serve as placement supervisors for the students out in the field.
“Each of our organizations has an ongoing commitment to the power tech program. We feel it is our duty to do our part to ‘home grow’ our next generation of workers,” said Brian McMillan, vice-president of Greater Sudbury Hydro and chair of the Powerline Technician Program Advisory Committee, during his address.
“I would like to thank Cambrian College and the Sheridan family for selecting our group to receive the award. We didn’t do it for the award or the accolade; the continued success of the program is what motivates us.”
