Queen’s Park intends to pay contractors on time

Queen’s Park may be slow in passing prompt payment legislation for the construction industry, but it wants to hold up its end of the bargain on provincial contracts.

Queen’s Park may be slow in passing prompt payment legislation for the construction industry, but it wants to hold up its end of the bargain on provincial contracts.

That’s earned them praised from the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce who views a policy as a “win for small business.”

The province updated its payment terms policy to ensure that payment is made within 30 calendar days.

“We are pleased to learn from the president of the Treasury Board Deb Matthews that the Province of Ontario has updated its payment policy and will now process payments within 30 days,” said chamber president Charla Robinson. “This revised policy will help to support small businesses that provide products and services to provincial ministries and agencies by ensuring they receive payment in a timely fashion.”

The chamber said it began raising the issue with the premier and local MPPs in 2013 in response to complaints from local business regarding slow payment turnaround for the goods and services provided to Ontario ministries.
