Winter road construction to reach remote First Nations was announced with $5 million in capital spending by the Ontario government.

The winter roads are vital links to send goods and services to isolated communities that otherwise have to be shipped by air during the warm weather months.

With this funding, 31 First Nations and the Town of Moosonee will have access to a 3,160-kilometre network of temporary roads over frozen ground and waterways.

The winter roads connect up with the provincial highway and railway system. Individuals and businesses use the roads from freeze-up until spring thaw.

Since October 2003, the Ontario government has invested more than $49 million through the Winter Roads Program.
