Bot Construction is ready to drop the hammer this month on a new highway bridge over the Nipigon River in northwestern Ontario.

It's part of the government's larger project to widen a 104-kilometre stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway between Thunder Bay and Nipigon.

Oakville-based Bot was awarded the $106-million contract for the bridge structure which will be completed sometime in 2017.

The four-lane, cable-supported bridge and walkway will the first of its kind in the provincial highway system. Three towers with cables will support the bridge deck.

The Ontario government said the project will provide more than 1,000 jobs.

A tremendously pleased Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle expects the bridge will become a tourism destination attraction.

“Once completed, the Nipigon River Bridge will be a magnificent structure and will certainly improve travel for countless local residents, visitors, businesses and families. This cable-stayed bridge will be the first of its kind in Ontario and is sure to become a destination attraction in its own right.”
