Zoning bylaw opposed

A Sault Ste. Marie citizen's group is still looking for city council to revisit a zoning bylaw that allows for the development of a big box plaza in the city.

The Citizens for the Survival of Sault Ste. Marie were behind an information session recently that dealt with the big box dilemma. The group is a coalition of area residents, businesses and retail organizations opposed to the construction of a big box plaza in Sault Ste Marie, claiming the downtown core of a community should be its primary focal point in order to keep the city alive and vibrant.

A city official says council has decided not to revisit the issue because the applicant is not requesting any changes to his already-approved zoning application.

City council unanimously passed a bylaw on May 10, 1999 that would allow for 36,500 square feet of retail shopping space in the northeast quadrant of Second Line and Great Northern Road.

The development, proposed by First Professional Management Inc., is opposed by a number of people and organizations in the community who want standing at an Ontario Municipal Board hearing on the bylaw.
