Abitibi-Consolidated's Fort Frances mill was forced to shut down one of its paper machines in early June due to rapidly rising water levels from the Rainy River. Water was pouring in through a sewer in the basement. Another mill was frantically building a raised bank next to its facility to prevent severe damage.
