Algoma Steel's home-grown advocate in Ottawa is resigning as chair of the federal all-party parliamentary steel caucus. Sault Ste. Marie Liberal MP Carmen Provenzano is stepping down on the advice of the parliamentary ethics counsel, but will remain on board as a member of the caucus. The ethics counsel voiced concerns about a potential conflict of interest between being chair of the caucus and Provenzano's position as parliamentary secretary to the minister of veterans affairs. Parliamentary secretaries are considered part of government's executive branch and cannot chair standing committees. Now in his second-term, Provenzano had held the caucus posting since February 2000.
