Domtar Inc. reached a deal in early May with its striking workers to end a seven-month-old labour dispute by mill workers at its Nairn Centre operations near Sudbury. The pact was reached after a 100-hour bargaining session over five days in Toronto. Upon recommendations from the leadership of Local 31X of the Communication, Energy and Paper Workers Union, membership ratified a five-year contract instead of the original 10-year pact asked for by the company. About 170 employees will be called back to work once some early-retirement packages are negotiated under the new contract.
