Charter operator declares bankruptcy

By: Northern Ontario Business Staff

A Great Lakes cruising company has financially floundered just days into its inaugural cruise to the upper lakes. About 120 passengers aboard the Arcadia, a Greek-registered liner, were forced to disembark at Sault Ste. Marie July 9 when its Wisconsin-based charter operator, Great Lakes Cruises Inc., announced it was declaring bankruptcy. A number of health violations aboard ship caused the U.S. Coast Guard in Detroit to issue a rare no-sail order under advisement of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. The order was lifted to allow the vessel to sail into American waters, but bad media publicity resulted in a flood of cruise cancellations. Passengers were told in mid-voyage the vessel operators had no money left for fuel and arrangements were made to bus them back to Windsor. It is unclear if passengers will get their money back. The Arcadia was scheduled to visit the Sault, Thunder Bay and Little Current amongst its ports of call this summer.
