Former Sudbury Inco boss Mark Cutifani has been anointed as the new chief executive for Anglo American.
The move becomes official on April 3. He replaces Cynthia Carroll, who will leave the company at the end of that month.
Cutifani had been CEO at AngloGold Ashanti, a South Africa-based gold producer, since 2007.
Before that he was the well-respected chief operating officer at CVRD Inco (now Vale), in charge of the miner's global nickel business, including the Sudbury basin.
Cutifani started his career in the Australian coal and gold mining industry. He holds an mining engineering degree and is the current president of the South African Chamber of Mines.
In a Jan. 8 release, Anglo American chairman Sir John Parker said Cutifani is a “seasoned miner” and chief executive with broad range of experience in a wide variety of commodities and jurisdictions.
“Mark is a highly respected leader in the global mining industry with values strongly aligned to those of Anglo American.”
