Sault university builds residence downtown

The scarcity of rental units in Sault Ste. Marie has prompted Algoma University to create a downtown student residence in a landmark building.

The university's need for as many as 100 beds means the current Windsor Park Retirement Residence will be converted into student living space by September. Two adjoining Queen Street commercial properties, including the Windsor Park, a former hotel, were donated to Algoma by Dr. Lou Lukenda in 2005. The university is the landlord and main shareholder.

Government regulations governing charities means the university cannot indefinitely own and operate a business outside of its core educational activities.

The university put the Windsor Park up for sale, but there have no takers.

In a news release, Deborah Loosemore, Algoma's Director of Advancement and External Relations, said it put the university in a difficult spot.

Residents are being asked to vacant the building before May 31 so summer renovations can be made for upcoming students. A lease with HBSC on the adjoining property will remain in effect.

Loosemore said Windsor Park management and staff will be assisting residents in finding new homes in the city.

Campus residences are full and the university is attracting more out-of-town students.

University enrolment has increased by 8.5 per cent for the 2009-2010 school year and school officials are anticipating a similar increase for September.
